Devon is too large for “anyone fancy golf?” to be a complete invitation. Start with your base: Exeter, Plymouth, north Devon or another local area. Then say how far you are willing to travel and whether you want a regular playing partner or company during a visit.

A shorter first round near Exeter
Exminster Golf Centre advertises nine- and 18-hole pay-and-play options and links to online tee-time booking. Its location at Exminster Hill makes it one option to investigate if you are organising a round in the Exeter area.
Nine holes can be a useful first meeting when you do not yet know each other’s pace or availability. Check what is included in the booking and how the longer option operates. If you need hire equipment or advice on suitability, contact the venue before booking.
Do not assume a course near Exeter is a convenient choice for golfers elsewhere in Devon. Share the venue and proposed arrival time early enough for everyone to assess the journey.
Use the county directory as a starting point
Devon Golf’s affiliated-club directory can help you investigate courses across the county. Affiliation is not a promise of public access, available tee times or acceptance of every type of group. Follow through to the club’s own visitor information and ask about the round you want to arrange.
For a society day, check minimum numbers, deposits and whether food is included. For a first meeting between two golfers, ask about ordinary visitor booking and any handicap or dress requirements.
Be clear about local and holiday golf
If you are visiting Devon, include your actual dates and where you are staying. If you live locally, say whether you hope to build a regular weekly or monthly routine. This prevents an enthusiastic conversation ending because nobody has matching availability.
Try: “I’m near Exeter and looking for a relaxed nine holes on a weekday afternoon. I’d like to find a regular playing partner, but happy to start with one round if we can get a suitable tee time.”
