MFGC’s West Midlands WhatsApp group is the place to start if you want to meet other golfers around Birmingham. Think of it as a WhatsApp golf club without membership fees: join the community, introduce yourself and arrange a game when your diaries line up. Community membership is free. Golf rounds and organised events are paid separately.
How to get your first round organised
- Register for your free WhatsApp invitation.
- Open the invitation displayed after registration and choose West Midlands.
- Include your part of Birmingham, travel limit, possible dates, nine or 18 holes and green-fee budget in your introduction.
- Agree the course, booking arrangements and total cost with anyone who replies before committing.
Beginners, returning golfers and existing club members are welcome. You do not need to bring a playing partner. Replies and tee times depend on availability; joining is not a confirmed booking.

Match the course to your time and experience
Mytime Active’s Birmingham golf information lists several options, including nine holes at Harborne Church Farm and 18-hole courses at Boldmere, Cocks Moors Woods, Hatchford Brook, Lickey Hills and Pype Hayes. That gives a new group a useful choice between a shorter introduction and a full round.
For your first game together, agree whether you want nine or 18 holes before comparing tee times. Nine holes can be easier to fit around work and family commitments. An 18-hole booking makes more sense when everyone has allowed enough time and is comfortable with that format.
Lickey Hills: plan for the terrain
Lickey Hills Golf Course is at Rose Hill, Rednal, beside the country park. The operator describes an 18-hole woodland setting with slopes. It also lists lessons, a pro shop, buggy hire and a café.
If walking distance or hills matter to anyone in your group, discuss that before choosing the course. Ask the operator about current buggy availability and conditions; an advertised hire facility does not guarantee a buggy for your particular tee time. Confirm the exact entrance and meeting point rather than simply sending everyone to the country park.
Find the right kind of golf society
A society with monthly away days is different from a small group arranging casual rounds. When enquiring, ask how often it plays, whether guests can try a day, what the total cost includes and whether there are handicap requirements for its competitions. If your main aim is a regular playing partner, you may prefer an informal game first.
Choose a practical search area: Harborne, Sutton Coldfield and Rednal should not be treated as interchangeable after-work meeting points. Give your starting area and maximum travel time so other golfers can suggest a realistic venue.
A Birmingham invitation to adapt
I’m based near Harborne and looking for a relaxed nine holes on a weekday afternoon. I’m fairly new to golf and happy to agree a course and green-fee budget first. Is anyone available next week?
Once someone replies, confirm the date, tee time, price, cancellation arrangements and who is booking. Meet with enough time to check in and warm up. Keep the first round’s expectations simple: friendly company, a sensible pace and a chance to arrange another game.
Do I need to join a club first?
You can enquire about visitor golf without taking out an annual course membership. Check the individual venue’s booking rules and tell it if you are a beginner or do not have a handicap.
