Looking for a golf society in Manchester, or simply someone to play with? Start by separating two decisions: who you want to meet, and where you can realistically play. You do not need to organise a large society day to get your first round in the diary.

Choose your part of Greater Manchester first
A player near Prestwich and a player near Stockport may both describe themselves as Manchester golfers, but have very different options for an after-work round. Give an area or a practical travel limit in your first message. For a regular game, a convenient course is usually a better starting point than a long list of famous venues.
Try agreeing one side of the city for the first meeting. Once you know each other, you can alternate venues or plan a longer weekend outing. If you depend on public transport, check the route to the golf entrance with your clubs, rather than assuming the nearest park entrance is the clubhouse.
A local starting point: Heaton Park
Heaton Park Golf Club describes itself as welcoming players of different abilities and offers membership information for men, women and juniors. There is a useful distinction on its website: club and membership enquiries go to the club, while tee-time bookings go directly to Heaton Park Golf Centre.
Use the golf centre booking route linked from the club website when arranging a casual round. Ask about current visitor availability, the format you want to play and any requirements before collecting money from other players. Manchester City Council also publishes Heaton Park parking information; include parking in your budget rather than treating the green fee as the full cost.
A society, a club or an informal game?
- An informal game suits golfers who want one or two playing partners and flexible dates.
- A golf society can suit a group wanting organised fixtures. Ask the organiser about guest places, scoring, fees and whether newcomers are paired with existing players.
- A course-based club can offer a regular calendar. Check membership and competition arrangements directly with the club.
MFGC is a way to meet golfers and discuss games. Joining the community does not reserve a tee time or include membership of any course mentioned here.
A first message you can adapt
Hi, I’m based near Prestwich and looking for a relaxed round in north Manchester. I’m returning to golf and can play Sunday mornings. Would anyone like to agree a course and budget for a game next weekend?
For a first meeting, agree the date, course, number of holes and total price before booking. Choose one person to make the reservation, make the cancellation terms clear and confirm where you will meet. A realistic, specific invitation is easier to answer than “Anyone fancy golf?”
New to golf or without a handicap?
Say so when you introduce yourself. Ask the course whether your experience suits the round and whether a handicap is required for your booking or competition.
