Southampton and Portsmouth share a wider South Hampshire urban area, but that does not make every golf course equally convenient for every player. When looking for a golf society or playing partner, start with which end of the area you can reach regularly.

Southampton: a shorter or full round

Southampton City Council’s golf page describes an 18-hole course and a separate nine-hole course at Southampton Municipal. It welcomes pay-and-play bookings and explains the visitor registration and tee-booking process.

For a first meeting, the nine-hole option is worth investigating if time is limited. Specify the course and number of holes in your booking conversation; “Southampton Municipal” alone does not tell your partner which round you mean. Portsmouth: distinguish the two courses

Portsmouth City Council lists two 18-hole pay-and-play options: Portsmouth Golf Course off Crookhorn Lane and Great Salterns on the Eastern Road side of the city. The council describes Portsmouth as a hilltop course and Great Salterns as parkland, with practice facilities at Portsmouth Golf Centre.

Those are separate venues. Send the exact course name and entrance when confirming a game. If walking on hills or access to a practice range matters, use those differences to guide an enquiry rather than choosing only by the first available tee time.

Plan around the journey

Agree whether the game is in Southampton, Portsmouth or somewhere between them before searching for times. A player who can manage a local evening round may not have time for a longer cross-area journey. Check the route at the intended travel time and leave enough margin for checking in.

Keep golf and travel costs together when agreeing a budget. If you plan food afterwards, make that optional or confirm the cost beforehand. A simple first round is often easier to organise than an elaborate day out.

Finding the right society

Ask prospective organisers where most fixtures take place and whether they welcome guests. Check the scoring format, handicap requirements, minimum attendance and total fee. A South Hampshire society could travel widely, so read its actual calendar instead of assuming all games are local.
